My name is Carmen Armenta, I am a mother of three wonderful children, one hearing (age 15) and two with hearing loss (ages 13 and 9). I wanted to be part of an organization that will help educate and support other parents and families with Deaf or hard of hearing children. When we discovered our second child had hearing loss we were scared, mad, overwhelmed, and a bunch of other emotions.  We didn't know where to turn! One Saturday we were at CarMax and saw a little boy with cochlear implants running and playing in the play area. I spoke to his mother and asked a million questions. I explain that we had a child that didn't pass her new born hearing screening. So, I asked her if she knew, "What. where, how, WHO, can help us?" That conversation let me to a Family Service Coordinator for Early Intervention and Hand & Voices NM. The rest is history. I want to pay it forward and help as many families as I can so they don’t have to feel as lost as we were. I want the let them know that everything is going to be okay! Help is out there. I believe that everybody has the right to choose what form of communication they feel most comfortable with. My children with hearing loss use both spoken language and sign language. My philosophy is simple: utilize any and all mediums to communicate so you can be heard. Everybody has the right to be heard!"
